31 May 2017: concerned about the state of prisoners in Mogadishu’s two main prisons, Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed “Farmaajo” has appointed a special commission to assess the state of prisoners in the Central Prison and the Criminal Investigation Centre. In a statement from Villa Somalia, President Farmajo said the new commission is tasked to draft an urgent report about the situation of inmates behind bars in the two prisons. The commission is expected to update the president on the total number of convicted people in the two prisons, number of prisoners awaiting trial and female and child prisoners.
