The Minister of Justice meets the President of the Tunisian League for the Defense of Human Rights, the President of the Arab Institute for Human Rights, and the President of the Tunisian Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty Tunisia

Tunisia, November 28, 2019.

On November 28, 2019, the Minister of Justice, Mr. Mohamed Karim El-Gamousy, met a delegation comprised of:

  • Jamal Musallam, President of the Tunisian League for the Defense of Human Rights
  • Abdel Basset Bin Hassan, President of the Arab Institute for Human Rights
  • Shukri Latif, President of the Tunisian Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty
  • Bassam Ammari, Program Coordinator at The Arab Institute for Human Rights
  • Khaled Al-Majri, the researcher who prepared the study of prison visits
  • Jamal Al-Maliki, who is in charge of the file to abolish the death penalty at the Tunisian League for the Defense of Human Rights

The meeting focused on the study carried out by these three organizations on the situation of death row inmates by conducting a series of meetings with them and talking to them in the framework of a cooperation with the General Administration of Prisons and Reform. The Minister of Justice stressed, on the occasion, that the Ministry was keen to open up to various initiatives that would support the work of the prison system, contribute to further help the prisoners, and provide greater opportunities to assist the prison institution to play its role to the fullest extent within the framework of respecting human dignity and preserving its physical and moral inviolability, as required in international standards in the field.

Further, the field study was conducted inside prisons. 5 copies of this study were provided by the three organizations for the Ministry and the General Administration of Prisons to see.
