Report of the public launch of the Action, final recommendations, 19 September 2017, Tunis.

Third Session : Recommendations from the facilitator of the session Mr. Mohamed Naguib Abdelmaoula

First Intervention: Professor Nicolas Barron: introduced  his association, founded since 2000 in France. In 1977 one third of the countries in the world do not apply the death penalty and now the death penalty has been abolished in two thirds of the world’s countries.  In 36 years, the international situation has changed in terms of the death penalty. This is due to the efforts of NGOs, and the international conference series, which have been accompanied by the International Conference on the Global Coalition against the Death Penalty.

Debate: Demographically populated countries have not yet been involved in the movement of abolishing of the death penalty, including the United States, China, India, Saudi Arabia and elsewhere. This makes the road long for the global movement.

Yes, but that does not make us ignore the progress in the fight against the death penalty.

Another intervention: I am optimistic about what is going on in Tunisia, a country with a significant historical reservoir in the advocacy of human rights, which makes us expect the abolition of the death penalty in Tunisia in the future of days.

Recommendations of the Seminar:

  • Supporting the anti-death penalty in educational institutions and contributing to changing mentalities in the Tunisian society.
  • Collecting, recording and documenting testimonies through the work of the General Administration of Prisons and Reform.
  • Orionate toward different professional bodies to contribute to change their mentalities and to educate in order to change mentalities.
  • Support the training on human rights benefiting workers in the field of prisons and reform.
  • Consider the General Administration of Prisons and Reform as a strategic partner for future projects in the strategy of the abolitionist movement.
  • Encourage civil society organizations to open dialogues around the criminal system to change mindsets.
  • Investing in art to change values and mentalities. The best speech of passion and mind are the helpful technical expressions to change attitudes towards the death penalty and to deepen the understanding of the causes of violence by using technical factors to deepen this understanding.
  • Invest the science of crime and the history of civilizations to help accept the abandonment of the death penalty.
  • Define the human face of all people and to help to consider the experimenter himself a victim of the circumstances which led to be a criminal.

The session concluded by thanking all participants on this day, hoping that the abolition of the death penalty would be supported in the future.
