24 december 2018: Somali authorities have today executed a 41-year-old man in Mogadishu for a role in three deadly bombings in Mogadishu.

The explosions which all happened in 2017 targeted hotels and restaurant, and claimed lives of over twenty people.
Abdulkadir Abukar Shaa’ir was shot by a firing squad early on Monday, according to a Somali military judge.

He was arrested in May last year by the security forces. He was the driver of Vehicle Borne Improvised Explosive Devices (VBIED) which was later detonated at Ex-Enayo in Mogadishu.

The convicted man was al –Shabaab veteran who has been with the group for years.

Shaa’ir was convicted of conducting pre-bombing surveillance, delivering explosive-laden cars to the areas al -Shabaab planned to attack.

 

“March 13, 2017, involved in a car bomb outside Hotel Weheliye, killed 10 wounded 17. April 5, 2017, delivered the car laden with explosive at a tea shop near Ministry of Sport, killed 9 wounded 10. On May 8, 2017, conducted pre-bombing surveillance on Bar Italia Restaurant which was targeted with a car bomb, killing 7 wounded 11,” reads the statement by Somali military court.

The execution comes barely two days after al-Shabaab carried deadly bombings in Mogadishu which claimed lives of over 30 people.

The twin blasts which took place near Somali national theatre also injured over fifty others.

Saturday’s first explosion targeted a security checkpoint near the national theatre, the rear entrance of the presidential palace. The second occurred near the tomb of the unknown soldier.

Al-Shabaab has claimed responsibility for both attacks.
